Fantastic Renaissance Revival walnut Victorian center table
Circa: 1870
Dimensions: 31″H x 48″W x 36″D
Finish: Good original
Fantastic Renaissance Revival walnut Victorian center table attributed to Gustave Herter. This piece has a velvet (old fabric) top with figured walnut edge. The skirt has burled inset panels with a detailed carving on four sides. The legs feature open mouthed lions with wings and bottom ball in claw feet.
The curved center stretchers support a large carving with a lions head on each side. There is a drawer at either end of the table. The interior of each drawer is birdseye maple with a divider. For our attribution of this table please refer to page 221 of “Herter Brothers, Furniture and Interiors for a Gilded Age.” The wings are very similar to those in catalogue number 5 and 6. The open mouthed lions are shown in catalogue number 8 and 96. Gustave Herter was the premier furniture maker of his day.
