Gien Faience “Renaissance Fond Bleu†China Porcelain Three Jar Inkwell
Features:
- Age: 1820s
- Dimensions: 14 x 8 x 4
Submitted for your consideration is an exceptional three jar porcelain inkwell from one of France’s finest manufacturers, Gien. Gien can trace its history back to 1820, when the company was founded in a former monastery by Thomas Hall. Throughout their history they have produced luxury wares in captivating designs. This large inkwell is part of their Renaissance Fond Bleu line.
The Gien designs incorporate typical Renaissance elements such as mythological beings, putti, garlands, masques, fish and coats of arms on white, black, brown and later blue backgrounds. Examples of the Renaissance fa?ence in the company’s inventory include the rare fond blanc (white background) pieces.
When the factory perfected the technique for making the rich, cobalt blue background (fond bleu) for the Renaissance designs, its output became more popular than ever and grew to include dinnerware, tea sets, serving pieces and numerous decorative items. In limited quantities, many of these items are still in production and can be seen on tours of the factory and its onsite museum.
This is a magnificent work that would grace any desk or tabletop. The work measures 14†by 8†by 4†and it is in excellent condition. Each end of the inkwell is decorated with detailed lion heads in a light blue that contrasts beautifully with the cobalt blue color that dominates the balance of the piece.
