Magnificent Renaissance Revival Victorian birdseye maple gentleman’s chest
Circa: 1870
Dimensions: 53″H x 38″W x 21″D
Finish: Excellent restored original
Magnificent Renaissance Revival Victorian birdseye maple gentleman’s chest signed “Herter Bro’s” on the back. We had a gold tooled green leather inserted into the top. The case has two drawers over five. The moldings around the top, drawers and side panels as well as the feet and pulls, are made of mahogany.
This contrast sets off the beauty of the lighter birdseye maple. There is a line incised carving around the drawers and side panels. Two fluted quarter columns are on each side of the case. “Herter Bro’s” is branded into the back and the original brass key is in the shape of an “H”.
Herter would custom make items for his wealthy clientele and this chest was custom cut in the rear bottom to accommodate a specific base molding. We had the original finish French polished (not stripped and refinished).
