Buying someone else’s furniture

My name is Sara Sandock, and I have recently joined Furniture Style as Managing Editor. My portfolio includes several business-to-business publications, covering a variety of topics including interior design. I am thrilled to be working exclusively in the home furnishings industry and am especially smitten because I am currently in the process of buying a place of my own.

Because I have a borderline obsession for decorating, I have been browsing for furniture long before I even narrowed down my location preference. During one of my furniture-hunting crusades, I came across an interesting and cash-conscious alternative to buying new pieces. Recently, there has been an implementation of a new kind of furniture store in which the owner handpicks pieces of old and used furniture to refurbish and resell. At first thought, the idea of buying someone else’s old furniture may not sound too appealing, but the right shop can clean, mend and modernize pieces that would otherwise be overlooked.
Immediately, I informed my parents of my discovery and after visiting the store, they bought a newly refurbished couch, coffee table, loveseat, dining room table and chairs to put in their lake house. All fabric had been replaced and updated, the items had been cleaned, and in the end they saved a pretty penny. Due to the economic struggles today, in my opinion there is absolutely nothing wrong with second-hand purchases. This kind of purchasing allows someone to save money in order to eventually buy new pieces in the future.
