Cebu furniture makers consider South Africa as export market

APART from tapping upscale market segments in Europe, Russia and the Middle East, furniture exporters in Cebu are also considering venturing into the South African market.

Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation Inc. (CFIF) president Eric Vincent Casas said the group is eyeing South Africa as a growing market for its products, since there are already Philippine-made products, such as furniture, custom jewelry and Christmas decors, being exported there.
Casas said they want to develop this growth by partnering with the Philippine Embassy in South Africa.

He and CFIF executive director Ruby Salutan were present during the “On to South Africa” meeting last Friday, which was attended by South Africa Ambassador to the Philippines Pieter Andries Vermeulen, Ambassador Virgilio Reyes Jr. of the Philippine Embassy in South Africa, and representatives of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (CCCI)-South Africa Business Council, among others.

Reyes said there is a series of furniture expositions lined up to happen in Cape Town and Johannesburg, which furniture exporters could use as a venue to tap the markets there.

CFIF has not yet made a market study of South Africa, but Casas considered last Friday’s meeting as a starting point to get the numerical data they need “so that they will be able to know what the prospects are for their members if and when they decide to exhibit in South Africa.”

“Normally, we exhibit as a group. That is the most cost-effective way in an international event,” he told reporters.
