Charity counts cost as vandals wreck furniture

Volunteers at West Lancashire Community Recycling Service, on Gillibrands, are now appealing for help to catch the thieves who left them struggling to carry on their service after taking hundreds of pounds, van keys, and a mobile telephone.

Project manager Maureen Fazal said: “I went to the office on Sunday morning to feed the cat and locks on both the windows and door were completely destroyed. We are absolutely gutted.”
The thieves stole the keys to the group’s only van, leaving them unable to move their furniture.

Maureen said: “We only have one van and have had to hire a transit van to continue the service. People cannot get in touch with us because the mobile phone has been stolen and deliveries and collections have had to be cancelled.”

WLCRS help people recycle their old furniture by refurbishing it and passing it on cheaply to those who need it.

Maureen said: “We are not going to let it affect us.

“The whole community is very upset but we are still up and running.”

Sergeant Andy Willis, from Skelmersdale Police, said: “We are aware of the incident. Forensic officers have visited the scene and are investigating it.”
