Dates for furniture market change again

The dates for the High Point furniture market are changing again.

Beginning in April 2009, the semiannual trade show will begin on Saturday and end on Thursday.

The board of directors for the High Point Market Authority approved the change today. The previous market week, which remains in place for the October show, was Monday through Sunday.
The primary reason for the date shift is better accommodating the needs of high-end retailers, interior designers, decorative accessories and gift dealers, and smaller independent retailers, said Brian Casey, the authority’s president and chief executive.

“Moving to a Saturday opening ensures that all customers will find all showrooms open and available to them, and staffed with the key executives and personnel they need to see in order to move business forward.”

The date switch represents the latest attempt by the authority to attract larger participation, particularly from retailers, as it competes against a rival Las Vegas trade show.

The number does not mean that everyone who registered attended the market. There were 3,613 fewer registrants than at the 2007 spring market. The spring market is typically the better-attended of the semiannual trade shows. The registration was also down 1,879 from the 2007 fall market.

The opening day was moved to Monday from Thursday in October 2006.

The authority also approved a move to switch the market months to March and September, but later withdrew the move because most market visitors preferred the April and October dates.
