Garden furniture sales up 75% at John Lewis

Last week’s hot weather may have caused overall sales at John Lewis to dip but the outdoor living section had a record week. Store sales for the week to May 10 dropped 4.3 per cent on last year to £47 million, while garden furniture and accessories sales were up 75 per cent.

John Lewis said the best seller was their own-brand stripy deck chair. The Furniture retailer sold three a minute last weekend, a sales increase of 111 per cent on the previous year. Barbeque sales were up 103 per cent on the previous year and the retailer noted that portable units were particularly popular.

John Lewis director of merchandise Jill Little said: “The warm weather brought a flurry of shoppers wanting to stock up on summer-related products and many areas have seen their best ever weeks.”

Outdoor toys and picnic accessories also sold well last week at John Lewis. The retailer sold four paddling pools every hour over the weekend and trampoline sales were up 78 per cent on the Furniture previous year. Picnic rug sales were up 84 per cent on the previous week and cool bag sales were up 26 per cent.
