Marijuana found in children’s furniture at Santa Teresa border crossing

Children’s furniture was used to conceal 436 pounds of marijuana seized this week by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Santa Teresa border crossing.

Darcy Glaser, 43, the driver, and Nicholas Vasquez, 19, a passenger, were arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt, said Roger Maier, spokesman for the federal law enforcement agency.

Both are U.S. citizens and residents of Albuquerque, according to a CBP statement.

Maier said the load was intercepted at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday after a 1999 Ford F-150 pickup entered the crossing from Mexico.

During secondary inspection, “Moscoe,” a CBP drug-detection canine, alerted to furniture in the bed of the pick up.

CBP officers performed an x-ray scan and noted irregularities in the appearance of the furniture. The officers dismantled the new furniture and removed 23 marijuana-filled bundles that weighed a total of 436 pounds.

The Santa Teresa marijuana seizure was the largest of 27 drug busts made by CBP officers at ports of entry in El Paso, West Texas and New Mexico during the week of Aug 1-7. The seizures included a total of 3,504 pounds of marijuana.
