Marin’s Bellach’s Furniture Chain In Bankruptcy Court
One of Marin’s oldest furniture chains is in a bankruptcy reorganization that the second-generation owner thinks could lead to the end of the 70-year-old family business.
Jerome Bellach, 66, of Belvedere, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March with the intention of reorganizing his business, which had slumped along with the economy.
Bellach’s recently closed a store at Vintage Oaks in Novato and had stores in San Rafael for years. It now has stores in Rohnert Park, San Francisco, Concord, Rocklin and Santa Clara.
Despite Bellach’s belief that reorganization would put the business back on its feet, the bankruptcy court has forced the closure of his stores, preventing him from earning the income he said he needs to pay creditors and get back on track.
“I went to file for Chapter 11 with the understanding I could bring my company out as a whole and no one would lose anything,” Bellach said. “It is not the spirit of the Santa Rosa bankruptcy court to want this to happen.”
Bellach, who took over the family business in 1972, said he could have successfully reorganized if the court left the business in his hands, but in May, the bankruptcy court appointed a trustee to oversee the case and operation of the furniture stores.
