Office Furniture Industry Finalizing Sustainability Standard
A new national sustainability standard for o
ffice furniture makers could become a template for other industries to use in developing their own guides for building efficiency into their processes. Herman Miller Inc. President and CEO Brian Walker, in a recent interview, said the standard allows manufacturers already involved in sustainability to go even further, while encouraging smaller companies to begin “the journey at a base level.”
The guidelines set new baselines to gauge the sustainable attributes of both products and internal business practices. Example of areas covered include: chemical composition of materials used in products and recycled and recyclable content, to manufacturing practices and corporate social responsibly. The standards, developed jointly by NSF and the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association in Grand Rapids, won overwhelming approval in a consensus vote this summer.
BIFMA Executive Director Tom Reardon said he hopes the standard can become final by early October.
As the marketplace increasingly focuses on sustainability, Reardon believes the standard can accelerate the “green” movement within the office furniture industry.
