Schools Get A Gymnasium Full Of Furniture

But when she opened the door of the NB Southern Railway warehouse and saw mounds of barely used cabinets, desks, chairs, even up-to-date computer equipment, she couldn’t believe her eyes.

“It blew me away,” said Tipper, who is superintendent of schools in District 8, which encompasses the Saint John area.

The furniture came from Allstate Insurance branches across the country through Green Solutions North America Inc., an organization that provides corporate social responsibility solutions to companies that have redundant material assets including desks, chairs and information technology equipment. The insurance company is revamping its many offices and, instead of sending its used furniture to the landfill, decided to join forces with Green Solutions, which distributes it to organizations and charities that need it.
“This would be the Cadillac of office furniture in our District 8 schools,” said Tipper. “You can’t put a dollar value on this. This donation is not only appreciated, it’s much needed.”

PALS is an acronym for Partners Assisting Local Schools, a program that aims to break the cycle of poverty for students in vulnerable neighbourhoods by combining a focus on academic achievement within a positive school environment. There are nine PALS schools now teamed up with 65 businesses and organizations that volunteer their time, and six new schools are coming on in the fall and seeking partners: River Valley Middle School, Grand Bay Elementary, Inglewood Elementary, Westfield Elementary, Islandview and Havelock Elementary.

Jim Reid, CEO of Green Solutions North America and Christianne Dostie, vice-president Allstate Brand, found it impossible to avoid becoming caught up in the emotion of the gift-giving as educators approached the podium to express what it means to them.

Both Prince Charles School principal Lynn Rector, who is retiring after 37 years as an educator, and Mayor Ivan Court told the gathering that the PALS program has transformed the school.

“Being part of Prince Charles School is probably one of the nicest ways to retire,” said Rector. “Prince Charles students have really benefited from all of the wonderful partnerships.”

Reid, who was overwhelmed by the response the gift was receiving, swallowed hard before telling the crowd he wasn’t sure if he could keep it together long enough to deliver his speech.
