Stamps to feature Eames furniture designs
Postage stamps coming out next month will honor an iconic couple with deep ties to West Michigan — Charles and Ray Eames.
Eight of the 16 stamps show products of the Eames-Herman Miller connection, ranging from the venerable Eames lounge chair and ottoman to a child’s wall organizer called “Hang It All.”
Herman Miller design director George Nelson brought the California-based couple and the Zeeland manufacturer together in the 1940s.
“He saw their work in New York at an exhibit and was very, very taken with the problem-solving approach which the Eames always took,” said Holland-based consultant John Berry.
He represents the Eames Office in dealings with Herman Miller, although his earlier career was with the office furniture company as the liaison to Eames.
“The Eameses were not about style. They were about problem-solving and understanding needs, then meeting the needs with new materials and new processes unencumbered by issues of style,” Berry said.
