Troubled Berkeley Youth Find Outlet in Furniture Decoration

A new non-profit in Berkeley is creating some unlikely artists out of homeless and at-risk youth.

Youth Spirit Artworks is a new non-profit–patterned after a similar program in New Orleans.

“We are involving youth in learning about commercial art through painting chairs,” said the group’s Executive Director Sally Hindman.
The chairs are sold through local businesses, with part of the proceeds funneled back to the young artists. They’re kids in a special niche who need a boost and a chance to learn a skill.

“They absolutely fall between the cracks and need so much more attention than they’re getting,” said Hindman. “Our program literally pays for itself in the decrease in graffiti in the community, by engaging youth that otherwise would be spray painting buildings in doing art.”
